Day 1
Individual arrival and half-day city tour of Muscat

Points of Interest : Old Muscat, Muscat, Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque
Upon arrival at Muscat airport in the morning, a representative of the local agency welcomes you and transfers you to your hotel. To introduce you to your Omani adventure, an English-speaking guide accompanies you on a half-day city tour. You visit the impressive Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, one of the most remarkable mosques in the region, famous for its enormous hand-woven prayer carpet and sparkling crystal chandelier. Note: the mosque can be visited daily except Fridays, and only until 11:00 a.m. If your city tour has to be moved to the afternoon due to your flight schedule, you can visit the mosque on your own the next day; it is only a short walk from your hotel.
Later you drive through the government district, passing the Royal Opera House and the city beach of Qurm, and continue to the old Muttrah souk in the harbour quarter. Its maze of alleys, colours and scents evokes the atmosphere of old Arabia. Near the Sultan’s Palace, nestled between the historic forts Mirani and Jalali, you take a short walk. The rest of the day is free for you to relax or explore Muscat at your own pace.
Driving time/distance: approx. 40 minutes, 40 km on paved and some urban roads.
- Meals included : None
- Accommodation : City Seasons Hotel Muscat 4*
Day 2
Vehicle handover, briefing and drive to Al Batinah and Wadi Bani Awf

Points of Interest : Barka, Wadi Bani Awf
After breakfast your 4×4 vehicle and travel documents are handed over. During an in-depth briefing, a member of the local team explains the itinerary and gives detailed information on safety and driving regulations in Oman. After check-out, you begin your self-drive journey towards Nakhl. The lovingly restored 17th-century Nakhl Fort, whose origins date back to the Yaruba dynasty, sits dramatically on a rocky outcrop above the oasis. You then continue to the nearby hot springs of Thowarah, just a few minutes from the fort.
Afterwards you drive towards Rustaq, with time permitting the option to visit the powerful Al Hazm Fort. Leaving the paved road, you follow gravel tracks into Wadi Bani Awf, characterised by steep gorges and bizarre rock formations. Numerous viewpoints invite photo stops and short walks through this striking landscape. In the late afternoon you choose a suitable spot and set up camp for the night in the wadi, enjoying your first night under the stars in your roof-top tent.
Driving time/distance: approx. 2 hours 40 minutes, 244 km on a mix of paved and off-road tracks.
- Meals included : Breakfast
- Accommodation : Roof-top tent camping in Wadi Bani Awf
Day 3
From Wadi Bani Awf via Bilad Sayt to Jebel Shams

Points of Interest : Jebel Shams, Bilad Sayt
You enjoy breakfast in the open air before continuing your journey towards the mountain village of Bilad Sayt. Here, almost 200-year-old traditional houses cling picturesquely to the mountain slopes above cultivated terraces. You traverse the narrow Snake Gorge, a dramatic canyon, before reaching Al Hamra, renowned for its well-preserved mud-brick houses.
A short detour takes you to the hillside village of Misfat al Abriyeen, where you stroll through lush gardens and traditional irrigation channels. Then you follow quiet mountain roads up towards Jebel Shams. At 3,009 m, it is the highest peak in Oman and on the Arabian Peninsula. From a high plateau you enjoy spectacular views into the so‑called Grand Canyon of Oman, a unique geological window into deep rock layers. There is time for an easy walk along the canyon rim before you set up your roof-top tent for the night near Jebel Shams.
Driving time/distance: approx. 2 hours 58 minutes, 94 km on a mix of paved and off-road mountain roads.
- Meals included : None
- Accommodation : Roof-top tent camping near Jebel Shams
Day 4
Jebel Shams to Nizwa, Bahla and Jabrin

Points of Interest : Bahla, Nizwa, Jabrin
You descend from the mountains into the fertile oasis city of Nizwa, historically one of Oman’s most important political and religious centres. Nizwa served as the capital from 751 until the 12th century and regained importance under the Yaruba dynasty from the 17th century. From afar you can already see the massive round tower of the fort and the dome of the Sultan Qaboos Mosque. You visit Nizwa Fort, whose ramparts offer panoramic views over the city and palm groves, and take your time to wander through the souk. The market area offers fresh produce, fish and local handicrafts, with the old section specialising in spices, silverware and everyday utensils.
You then continue to Bahla, home to a well-preserved city wall and a vast fort that is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as well as a traditional pottery. Afterwards you drive to the Imams’ palace in Jabrin. Built in the 17th century, this residential castle is designed as a fort and is famed for its richly decorated wooden ceilings and painted interiors – a highlight of any journey through Oman. You spend the night in the Jabrin area, again sleeping in your roof-top tent.
Driving time/distance: approx. 1 hour 43 minutes, 89 km on a mix of paved and some off-road stretches.
- Meals included : None
- Accommodation : Roof-top tent camping near Jabrin
Day 5
From Jabrin to Wadi Bani Khalid and Wahiba Sands

Points of Interest : Wahiba Sands, Wadi Bani Khalid
Today you head east towards the Wahiba Sands desert. Your first destination is Wadi Bani Khalid, considered the most beautiful wadi in the Al Sharqiyah region. Thanks to the perennial water flow, several natural pools filled with turquoise water and framed by dense greenery invite you to swim and cool off. After some time to relax, you continue towards the desert.
In the early afternoon you meet your Bedouin guide at the Al Maha petrol station in Al Wasil and drive together into the dunes to the desert camp. The Wahiba Sands cover around 15,000 km² in eastern Oman and extend in their fringes almost to the ocean. You enjoy the unique atmosphere of the sea of sand, watch the play of light at sunset and share a traditional dinner at the camp before spending the night in a comfortable desert chalet.
Driving time/distance: approx. 2 hours 43 minutes, 220 km on a combination of paved roads and desert tracks.
- Meals included : Dinner
- Accommodation : Arabian Oryx Desert Camp 4*
Day 6
Wahiba Sands desert crossing to the coast and Al Ashkara

Points of Interest : Ramlat Al Wahiba
After breakfast at the desert camp, an escort vehicle meets you for a very special experience: a full crossing of the Wahiba Sands by 4×4 all the way to the coast of the Indian Ocean. Under the guidance of experienced drivers you traverse extensive dune fields for several hours. The vast desert scenery and the moment when the dunes finally meet the sea are truly unforgettable.
Near Al Ashkara, once you reach the paved coastal road again, you say goodbye to the escort vehicle. The rest of the day is at your leisure to enjoy the beach, walk along the shoreline or simply relax. You camp close to the sandy beach and listen to the sound of the waves as you fall asleep in your roof-top tent.
Driving time/distance: approx. 3 hours, 160 km on a mix of off-road dunes and paved roads.
- Meals included : Breakfast
- Accommodation : Roof-top tent camping near the beach at Al Ashkara
Day 7

Points of Interest :
You have time to explore the beautiful coastline of the Indian Ocean, take a refreshing swim or enjoy a picnic on the beach. Later you drive to Ras Al Hadd, where at the easternmost point of Oman you are rewarded with sweeping panoramic views of the sea and coastline.
Nearby lies the famous Turtle Beach of Ras Al Jinz. In the evening, accompanied by a ranger, you walk quietly along the beach to observe the rare green sea turtles as they come ashore to lay their eggs – a moving natural spectacle if conditions permit. Dinner is served at your seaside accommodation, where you also spend the night.
Driving time/distance: approx. 1 hour 26 minutes, 103 km on paved coastal roads.
- Meals included : Breakfast, Dinner
- Accommodation : Turtle Beach Resort 3*
Day 8
From Ras Al Jinz via Sur and Wadi Shab back to Muscat

Points of Interest : Empty Quarter (Rub’ al Khali), Sur, Wadi Shab, Fins, Bimmah
After breakfast you say farewell to Ras Al Jinz and drive to the historic port town of Sur. Here you can watch craftsmen building traditional wooden dhows in an open-air shipyard, continuing a centuries-old maritime tradition. You then continue along the coast towards Qalhat to visit the mausoleum of Bibi Miriam, a site included on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2018.
The road then leads to the picturesque Wadi Shab, where you walk through a dramatic gorge lined with palm groves and pools. Afterwards you drive on to Fins to discover a typical fishing village and the many nearby sandy beaches. A final highlight is the Bimmah Sinkhole, an ancient limestone crater filled with clear, turquoise water and supplied by underground channels. In the afternoon you reach Muscat and return your rental car at the airport in time for your onward or return flight.
