Points of Interest : Shanghai

Upon arrival in Shanghai you are warmly welcomed and transferred to your hotel, which also offers optional wellness facilities. The rest of the day and evening are at leisure so you can recover from the journey and get a first feel for the city.

It is highly recommended to stroll along the famous Bund promenade, where you can admire the historic colonial facades on one side and the futuristic skyline of Pudong across the river on the other.

  • Meals included : Dinner
  • Accommodation : Sunrise on the Bund (Shanghai)
Day 2

Tai Chi and Chinese Cooking Class in Shanghai

Tai Chi instructor guiding a small group of travelers in slow movements in a leafy Shanghai city park

Points of Interest : Shanghai

In the morning you take part in a Tai Chi session in Fuxing Park, led by an experienced local Tai Chi master. Surrounded by trees and locals practicing dance and calligraphy, you learn the flowing movements and breathing techniques of this traditional martial art.

Afterwards you enjoy a walk through the Former French Concession, a quarter that from the 18th century to the early 20th century was a foreign concession. European-style townhouses and Catholic churches still give the streets a distinct character.

After lunch you have free time to explore trendy Xintiandi and the artsy lanes of Tianzifang at your own pace. Later in the day you join a private cooking class, where you learn Chinese cooking techniques and gain insights into the culture and philosophy behind Chinese cuisine. In the evening you can enjoy a spectacular acrobatics show with gravity-defying performances.

  • Meals included : Breakfast and lunch
  • Accommodation : Sunrise on the Bund (Shanghai)
Day 3

Longjing Tea and the Landscapes of Hangzhou

Green terraced tea fields around Longjing village near Hangzhou with misty hills in the background

Points of Interest : Jinyuan Hangzhou

This morning you board a high-speed train from Shanghai to Hangzhou, a city once described by Marco Polo as the “Venice of the East” for its canals and lakeside scenery. After arrival you drive to Longjing village, world-famous for its fragrant Dragon Well green tea.

Here you are welcomed into a local farmer’s home for a homemade lunch. All dishes are prepared with green tea as an ingredient, such as shrimp with green tea leaves, giving you a unique culinary experience. You also learn about the full tea-production process, from picking to pan-firing.

Later you walk through the terraced tea fields and verdant valleys, with sweeping views of the plantations and tea harvesters at work. The evening is free for you to explore Hangzhou on your own, perhaps around West Lake or in the old town.

  • Meals included : Breakfast and lunch
  • Accommodation : Best Western Hangzhou Meiyuan Hotel (Hangzhou)
Day 4

Buddhist Lingyin Temple and Chinese Herbal Medicine

Visitors walking among traditional halls and incense smoke at Lingyin Temple near Hangzhou

Points of Interest : Jinyuan Hangzhou

Today you visit Lingyin Temple, one of the largest and most important Buddhist temples in China, nestled amid forested hills. You stroll among ornate halls filled with incense, golden Buddha statues and ancient stone carvings.

You then continue to Huqingyutang, a renowned museum and historic pharmacy dedicated to Chinese medicinal herbs. Together with a doctor of Chinese herbal medicine you explore the proverb “You are what you eat” and discover how diet and ingredients are linked to health in Chinese thought. This is a chance to better understand the philosophy behind Traditional Chinese Medicine and to hear experts’ views on nutrition and well-being.

In the afternoon you can experience an authentic teahouse by West Lake, where locals sip tea, play cards and relax while enjoying lakeside views.

  • Meals included : Breakfast and lunch
  • Accommodation : Best Western Hangzhou Meiyuan Hotel (Hangzhou)
Day 5

Hangzhou Teahouses and Flight to Chengdu

Traditional Sichuan hot pot bubbling with red chilies and peppercorns on a table in Chengdu

Points of Interest : Jinyuan Hangzhou, Chengdu

The morning is free for you to discover more of Hangzhou’s teahouses, where you can sample different varieties of green tea and observe local tea culture. Later you transfer to the airport for your flight to Chengdu, a city famous for its tea culture and unhurried lifestyle.

After landing in Chengdu you visit the Daoist Temple of the Green Goat, one of the most important Daoist temples in southwest China, with tranquil courtyards and traditional architecture.

In the evening you enjoy a welcome dinner of the iconic Sichuan hot pot. There is a clear reason why the people of Chengdu love hot pot, especially the spicy version: the often overcast sky and high humidity in Sichuan are considered bad for bones and blood circulation, so locals turn to chili and Sichuan peppercorns to warm the body and balance internal temperature.

  • Meals included : Breakfast and dinner
  • Accommodation : Tibet Hotel (Chengdu)
Day 6

TCM Course and Visit to a Panda Breeding Center

Giant panda sitting in a leafy enclosure eating bamboo at a breeding center near Chengdu

Points of Interest : Chengdu

For the next two days your mornings are devoted to a structured introduction to Traditional Chinese Medicine at Chengdu University of TCM. The course covers the history of TCM, diagnostic methods such as pulse and tongue reading, knowledge of medicinal herbs, the principles of acupuncture and moxibustion, herbal prescriptions and therapeutic massage techniques.

In the afternoon you travel about 20 km north of Chengdu to visit a panda breeding center. Here you can observe giant pandas in a semi-natural environment, learn about conservation efforts and see how young pandas are cared for.

After returning to Chengdu you enjoy dinner in a vegetarian restaurant within a monastery, combining temple atmosphere with refined meat-free cuisine.

  • Meals included : Breakfast and dinner
  • Accommodation : Tibet Hotel (Chengdu)
Day 7

TCM Course and Sacred Daoist Mountain Qingchengshan

Cable car ascending forested slopes of Qingchengshan mountain towards traditional Daoist temples

Points of Interest : Chengdu

This morning you continue your TCM studies at the university and visit the medical facilities, where you can see, touch and smell a wide range of Chinese medicinal herbs and understand how they are stored and prepared.

In the afternoon you set out for Qingchengshan, a sacred Daoist mountain located around 70 km west of Chengdu. The drive takes about one hour through rural Sichuan landscapes. On arrival you visit the Hundred Herbs Garden, where numerous medicinal plants are cultivated for therapeutic use.

You then take a cable car up the mountain, enjoying forest and peak views, and visit Daoist temple complexes that are closely linked to the origins of Daoist philosophy and inner cultivation practices.

As on the previous day, you return to Chengdu in the evening for dinner in the city.

  • Meals included : Breakfast and dinner
  • Accommodation : Tibet Hotel (Chengdu)
Day 8

From Chengdu to Beijing and the Summer Palace

Traditional pavilion and arched bridge reflected in the lake at the Summer Palace in Beijing

Points of Interest : Chengdu, Beijing

In the morning you are transferred to the airport for your flight to Beijing, China’s fascinating capital. After arrival you visit the graceful Summer Palace, once the lakeside retreat of Qing dynasty emperors, with ornate pavilions, corridors painted with mythological scenes and bridges around Kunming Lake.

In the evening you have the opportunity to try a medicinal dinner in a local restaurant, where the dishes are designed in accordance with TCM principles to support balance and health.

  • Meals included : Breakfast and dinner
  • Accommodation : Qianmen Jianguo Hotel (Beijing)
Day 9

Neos Travel designed a trip that could be personalized to my schedule. The guides were very competent, and it was possible to start later and stay longer to fit my daily rhythm. Markus provided excellent planning advice and was always reachable, offering several alternatives. I couldn't fault a thing—perfect—and I will plan my next Japan trip again with Neos Travel.

Neos Travel took care of everything and the trip was well organized. From pickup at the train station, rides in our minibus with the driver, to the hotel, tour guide, meals, sights, and the schedule—everything ran smoothly. Our tour guide, Frau Ling, was excellent and very attentive. She spoke good German and also brought humor to our teenage group. Even when she couldn’t answer every question, she gave us a thorough introduction to Chinese culture. She adjusted the program to weather conditions and led us enthusiastically through the vegetable market.

China was our first trip there, and we honestly couldn't imagine doing it any better. Neos Travel's local partner Markus planned and organized everything to perfection for us. From our very first contact with Markus to the end of our entire China tour, we received expert guidance, attentive support, and plenty of practical tips. Over 19 days we explored Beijing, Luoyang, Xi'an, Guilin, Yangshuo, Hangzhou, Suzhou, and Shanghai. We rode high-speed trains four times and took two domestic flights. At every stop we had a private guide and driver, and everything ran seamlessly. Guides welcomed us at stations and airports with signs bearing our name, so we found each other immediately. The guides spoke excellent German, were courteous, friendly, and possessed an incredible depth of knowledge that they shared with us brilliantly. Every single day was fantastic and completely different. It's impossible to pick a highlight — it was all wonderful and breathtaking. A huge thank-you to Markus; we had a wonderful time in China. We’re also very happy with Neos Travel and would gladly recommend it.

China surprised me with its efficient public transport, the high electrification of traffic, and the overall cleanliness and safety — a wonderful destination for travel. At first I had to adjust to the crowds, but the wide streets and parks help spread people out, so you’re rarely crowded. Landscapes impressed me: Beijing’s northern surroundings and Guilin’s scenery in the south were highlights. I was lucky with the weather — three weeks without a drop of rain! Among the cities, Beijing and Shanghai left a strong impression; Xi’an and Chengdu were also beautiful, while Giongqing was a bit much for me. The guides were excellent, and through them I learned a lot about the country’s history and culture. I admire how the drivers handle the heavy traffic — calm, confident, and in control. Communication with Neos Travel was quick and informative at all times, and everything went smoothly. Thank you, Neos Travel; I would gladly recommend you.

As part of our Neos Travel itinerary, our first day in Shanghai was filled with boundless wonder. The city, the traffic, the people—everything felt larger than life! It takes a moment to adjust to the crowds, but Xi’an was especially impressive beyond Shanghai. The hotel selections were excellent in Shanghai, Chengdu, Xi’an, and again in Shanghai/Pudong, and very tidy in Hangzhou; we were less impressed by Suzhou (Holiday Inn) and Beijing (Penta Hotel). The boat trip was very good, and the views along the Yangtze were partly superb. The first excursion into the Xiling Gorge was thrilling!

Overall, the trip was very nice. The on-site guides were good and informative, and the drivers were mostly excellent (one exception). The accommodations were also fine. The only clouds were the cancellation of the helicopter flight and the hot-air balloon ride, which dimmed the finale somewhat. In the future, it would be better not to collect money upfront for activities—pay on-site if the event goes ahead. We also appreciated the travel guidance from our Neos Travel team, especially the Xi'an tip about the evening theater with dinner.

We did a tailor-made journey with Neos Travel. From Frankfurt we flew to Beijing to visit the Great Wall, then after this short stop we hopped on the train to Xining and from there embarked on the legendary journey to Lhasa (we were the only foreigners on the train). Lhasa was our central stop, and from there we explored Tibet thanks to the excellent organization by Neos Travel. We'd love to come back.

This trip, organized by Neos Travel, turned out to be perfectly planned. We were all initially thrilled by how well it was organized; we had no problems or uneasy moments, and we felt very safe as everything ran smoothly. The China journey was very impressive for us Europeans; we hadn’t expected it to be so wonderful, and we all gained plenty of impressions. Although we visited several big cities, we never felt that the people were stressed. The sights were busy, but it was not an organizational issue. We take only positive memories from the China trip and would highly recommend the organization.
