    Day 1

    Flight to Muscat and transfer to Shangri-La Hotel - Al Waha

    After completing immigration and customs formalities at Muscat Airport, you are welcomed by the local representative and driven to your hotel in Muscat. The resort is beautifully located by the sea and offers a wide range of facilities and activities for both adults and children, making it particularly suitable for families.

    Day 2

    Muscat city tour

    After breakfast you start your guided city tour of Muscat with a visit to the impressive Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque. You explore the separate prayer halls for men and women and learn about the symbolism of the five minarets, which represent the five pillars of Islam. The route continues through the embassy district to Muttrah, where you drive along the Corniche and over Riyam Pass into Old Muscat. Here you see the ceremonial Sultan’s Palace, framed by two old Portuguese forts, and you can also visit the Bait Al Zubair Museum to gain deeper insight into Omani history and culture.
    Approximate driving time during the tour: around 30 minutes between main stops, plus local touring.

    Day 3

    Snorkeling at the Daymaniyat Islands

    Today you head out by boat to the Daymaniyat Islands, an offshore archipelago famous for its clear waters and rich marine life. Each island offers different underwater experiences, from sheltered coves with turquoise water and white sand beaches to reefs teeming with tropical fish. With a bit of luck you can snorkel alongside sea turtles, which is an unforgettable and educational experience for children as they learn about the various turtle species that inhabit these waters. After the snorkeling excursion, your driver takes you back to the hotel.
    Boat journey time to the islands: about 2.5 hours each way.

    Day 4

    Along the coastal road from Muscat to Ras Al Jinz via Sur

    You leave Muscat and follow the scenic coastal road towards Sur. En route you stop at Fins Beach to admire the long stretches of white sand and the deep blue sea. You also visit the Bimmah Sinkhole, a limestone crater filled with striking turquoise water, and pass by Wadi Shab, one of Oman’s most beautiful wadis, known for its dramatic rock formations and pools. In Sur you explore the traditional dhow shipyard, where wooden boats are still built without nails or glue – a testament to the town’s historic wealth from shipbuilding, trade with East Africa and sardine fishing. In the afternoon you continue to Ras Al Jinz. After dark you join a guided walk on the beach to observe sea turtles as they come ashore to lay their eggs – a particularly magical encounter for children.

    Day 5

    Wahiba Sands desert and Wadi Bani Khalid

    Today you drive inland to one of Oman’s most beautiful and lush wadis, Wadi Bani Khalid. Here you find date palms, terraced gardens, traditional falaj irrigation channels and natural pools of crystal-clear water, where you can stop for a refreshing swim with the children. Later you continue by 4×4 into the golden dunes of the Wahiba Sands desert. You visit a Bedouin family to experience traditional desert hospitality and then head into the dunes to watch the sunset over the rolling sand sea. The Wahiba Sands cover around 15,000 km², in some parts reaching all the way to the Indian Ocean. The area is home to more than 200 species of mammals, birds and reptiles, around 180 plant species and many different dune formations. From the camp there is usually the chance in the early morning to see or ride local camels, along with other optional desert activities suitable for both adults and children.
    Driving time: about 3.5 hours from Ras Al Jinz to the desert, including a stop at Wadi Bani Khalid.

    Day 6

    Castles and forts of the interior

    You leave the desert and travel towards Nizwa to explore some of Oman’s most beautiful historical fortresses. You visit Jabrin Castle, once the seat of a learned Omani dynasty, with richly decorated ceilings and rooms. A stop at the UNESCO-listed Bahla Fort lets you admire its vast mud-brick walls and sweeping views. In Nizwa you explore the impressive 17th-century round tower of Nizwa Fort and wander through the traditional souq, where you can see finely crafted khanjar daggers and ornate silver jewellery. On Fridays a lively livestock auction takes place. Time permitting, you also head up to the Saiq Plateau, long accessible only by donkey, often called the “roof of Oman” for its high elevation and dramatic scenery.

    Day 7

    After breakfast you set out with your guide to discover Jabal Al Akhdar, the “Green Mountain”, and its scattered villages. The road winds past terraced gardens where pomegranates, apricots, lemons and other fruits are cultivated on steep slopes. A short detour takes you to the famous rose gardens, which are especially impressive when in bloom around April and are used to produce fragrant rose water. You can enjoy gentle walks through villages and wadis such as Wadi Bani Habib, Shrejaya, Al Ain or Aqur, while taking in the cooler, drier mountain air that makes this region a refreshing contrast to the coast and desert.
    Driving time: around 3.5 hours of total driving in the area, including access to and from Jabal Al Akhdar and local transfers.

    Day 8

    Return to Muscat

    After breakfast you drive back down from the mountains towards Muscat via the town of Fanja, known for its palm groves and views of traditional mud-brick houses. You arrive in Muscat in the afternoon and check into your beach resort. The family-friendly Al Waha hotel is widely considered one of the best choices in Muscat for families, thanks to its kids’ facilities, pools and easy beach access. The rest of the day is free to relax by the pool or on the beach.
    Driving time: about 3 hours to the hotel in Muscat.
