On arrival at Muscat Airport, you are welcomed by your local guide and transferred into the city. To introduce you to Oman, you visit the impressive Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, one of the most beautiful mosques in the region. You then drive through the government district, passing the Royal Opera House and the Qurm city beach, before reaching the old Muttrah souk in the harbour area, whose narrow alleyways, colours and scents evoke the Arabia of days gone by. Near the Sultan’s Palace, framed by the medieval forts Mirani and Jalali, you take a short walk to admire the architecture and coastal setting. The rest of the day is free for you to relax or explore Muscat at your own pace.

Wadis and more forts in Al Batinah

Mountain road leading through a rocky wadi valley with a historic fort and palm oasis in northern Oman

Points of Interest : Wadi Mistal, Rustaq, Al Batinah

In the morning you meet with local travel experts for a detailed briefing on your route. Afterwards your 4×4 rental car is handed over and you set off towards the Al Batinah region. Your first stop is the lovingly restored Nakhl Fort from the 17th century, dramatically perched on a rocky outcrop above the palm oasis. You continue to the Thowarah hot spring, then drive into Wadi Mistal and up to the mountain village of Wakan, enjoying views over terraced fields and rugged peaks. The route then leads through the wild Wadis Bani Awf and Sahtan, marked by steep gorges and striking rock formations, before you reach Rustaq and nearby Al Hazm Fort. Built in 1708 and recently extensively restored, Al Hazm is one of the largest and most fascinating fortresses in the country. In the late afternoon you drive back to Muscat.

Today you follow the coastal road from Muscat to Sur. After crossing Wadi Qurayat you descend towards the shores of the Indian Ocean, where the route offers sweeping views of deep-blue water and pristine white-sand beaches. En route you stop at the Bimmah Sinkhole, an ancient limestone crater filled with clear turquoise seawater. Before reaching the harbour town of Sur, you stretch your legs on a short hike in picturesque Wadi Shab, one of Oman’s most beautiful wadis, lined with cliffs and palm groves. In Sur you visit a traditional shipyard where the iconic wooden dhows are still built by hand without nails or glue, following age-old techniques.

Into the heart of the Wahiba Sands desert

You leave the coast and drive inland towards the Wahiba Sands desert. On the way you stop at Wadi Bani Khalid, often described as the most beautiful wadi in the Al Sharqiyah region. Thanks to its permanent water flow, several natural pools filled with emerald and turquoise water invite you to swim, surrounded by lush vegetation and rocky slopes. Afterwards you continue towards the desert, meeting your Bedouin guide in Al Wasil. Together you drive by 4×4 across the sand tracks into the dunes to reach your desert camp. The Wahiba Sands cover some 15,000 km² in eastern Oman, with rolling dunes whose fringes even reach the ocean. Enjoy sunset over the sands and the starry desert sky in the evening.

Leaving the desert behind, you drive towards Ibra, where you stroll through the atmospheric old quarter with its abandoned mud-brick houses that recall earlier trading fortunes. You then continue to the Imam’s Palace of Jabrin, a 17th-century residential castle built as both a palace and a defensive structure. Renowned for its beautifully painted wooden ceilings and finely carved details, it is a highlight of any journey through Oman. The route leads on to the oasis town of Bahla, where you can admire the impressive city wall, visit the UNESCO-listed Bahla Fort and discover a traditional pottery workshop. Later you continue to Nizwa, once the capital of Oman and still an important cultural and religious centre, where you spend the night.

Nizwa has long been a religious and trading hub and served as Oman’s capital until the 12th century. Its skyline is dominated by the massive round tower of the fort and the dome of the Sultan Qaboos Mosque. You visit the fortress, enjoying panoramic views over the palm groves and town, and take your time to explore the surrounding souks. In the old sections you’ll find spice stalls, while other parts of the market are dedicated to fresh produce, fish and traditional silver jewellery. Later you drive into the Hajar Mountains. In Al Hamra, famous for its old mud-brick houses, you visit Bait Safah, a heritage house where local women demonstrate traditional Omani crafts and daily life. From here you ascend to the high plateau of Jebel Shams, at 3,009 metres the highest peak on the Arabian Peninsula, and admire the spectacular view into the deep gorge often dubbed the Grand Canyon of Oman. You then return to Nizwa for the night.
