Desert Castles in Eastern Jordan & Amman City Tour

Ancient desert castle in Jordan surrounded by arid landscape and blue sky

Points of Interest : Amman

After breakfast you drive east to explore Jordan’s famous desert castles, a collection of small castles and fortresses scattered across the eastern desert. These early Islamic structures once served as caravan stations, retreats and defensive outposts.

Later you return to Amman for an in-depth city tour. You visit the remarkably well-preserved Roman amphitheatre with seating for around six thousand spectators, overlooked by the Citadel. Nearby stands the Al-Husseini Mosque. On the upper terrace of the Citadel hill you see remains of the fascinating Umayyad Palace (Qasr). In the city centre you stroll through the traditional Arab bazaar, the bustling souq.

  • Meals included : Breakfast and dinner
  • Accommodation : Hotel in Amman
Day 3

The Ruins of Late Antique Gadara at Umm Qais

Ancient stone ruins at Umm Qais overlooking green hills and the Sea of Galilee

Points of Interest : Amman, ‘Ayn Umm Qays, Salt

After breakfast you head north to Umm Qais, situated at Jordan’s northern tip. Here the ruins of ancient Gadara tell of a glorious Greco-Roman and Byzantine past. From its steep ridge you enjoy sweeping views over the Golan Heights and the Sea of Galilee, with panoramic vistas into neighbouring Syria and Israel.

You then continue via the Jordan Valley towards the town of Salt. En route you stop to visit an ornate family tomb decorated in relief, with sarcophagi and numerous grave goods, likely dating from the 3rd century AD. In the late afternoon you drive back to Amman.

  • Meals included : Breakfast and dinner
  • Accommodation : Hotel in Amman
Day 4

Roman Masterpieces in Jerash and the Dead Sea

Colonnaded Roman street and ruins in Jerash under a bright blue sky

Points of Interest : Gerasa, Dead Sea

After breakfast you drive to Jerash, one of the best-preserved examples of a Roman garrison town in the world. As you walk along the colonnaded streets and past triumphal arches, the tetrapylon and the theatres, you are surrounded by impressive remains of Roman architecture. You also admire the monumental temples dedicated to Zeus and Artemis.

Later you continue to the Dead Sea, whose extremely high salt content makes it a natural source of health and wellness. Here you can experience the unique sensation of floating effortlessly on the water’s surface.

  • Meals included : Breakfast and dinner
  • Accommodation : Hotel at the Dead Sea area
Day 5

Madaba, Mount Nebo and the King’s Highway to Petra

Historic church interior in Madaba with colorful floor mosaics

Points of Interest : Karak, Madaba, Mount Nebo, Petra

After breakfast you set off for Madaba, known as the “City of Mosaics”. The town is especially famous for its magnificent Byzantine mosaic map from the 6th century AD. This masterpiece, composed of around two million tesserae, depicts the entire Holy Land with Jerusalem at its centre, along with numerous scenes from the Old and New Testaments.

You then continue to Mount Nebo, from where Moses is said to have first seen the Promised Land. Afterwards you follow the historic King’s Highway south towards Kerak, passing Wadi Mujib – often called Jordan’s Grand Canyon – before finally reaching Petra in the evening.

  • Meals included : Breakfast and dinner
  • Accommodation : Hotel in Petra
Day 6

Full-Day Hike in the Rock City of Petra

Narrow gorge leading to Petra’s Treasury carved into rose-red rock

Points of Interest : Petra

After breakfast you embark on a full-day hike through the rock-hewn city of Petra, capital of the ancient Nabataeans. On foot you truly appreciate the scale and beauty of this UNESCO World Heritage Site, and only by walking can you reach the more remote temples and ancient sacrificial sites.

These sanctuaries are set among multi-coloured sandstone mountains or perched on striking plateaus. One of the highest viewpoints is the sacred Mount Aaron (around 1,350 m), where, according to tradition, Moses’ brother Aaron is buried. A small white mosque crowns the summit, offering far-reaching views over the surrounding mountain landscape.

  • Meals included : Breakfast and dinner
  • Accommodation : Hotel in Petra
Day 7

Jeep Tour and Camel Ride in the Desert of Wadi Rum

Off-road jeep and camels crossing the red sand dunes and rock formations of Wadi Rum desert

Points of Interest : Wadi Rum

After breakfast you drive to Little Petra, once a key caravan stop in the Nabataean kingdom, and explore its rock-carved facades. You then continue into the dramatic desert landscapes of Wadi Rum. Slender rock pinnacles, spectacular natural rock bridges and glowing red granite mountains rise out of the sand, giving this so‑called “Valley of the Moon” its unique character.

After lunch at your desert camp, you set off on a jeep tour through Wadi Rum’s sweeping dunes and rock formations. Later, settled Bedouins invite you to experience the desert by camel. You sway across the sand for about an hour, riding between towering cliffs, passing through a canyon, admiring Nabataean rock carvings and climbing up to a rock bridge. As evening falls you watch an unforgettable sunset over the desert before enjoying a delicious dinner back at camp.

  • Meals included : Breakfast, lunch and dinner
  • Accommodation : Desert camp in Wadi Rum
Day 8

Relaxing on the Red Sea in Aqaba

Sandy beach and turquoise waters of the Red Sea near Aqaba with mountains in the background

Points of Interest : Red Sea, Aqaba

After breakfast you drive south to Aqaba on the Red Sea. The southern part of this port city is ideal for unwinding on the beach and enjoying the warm waters. Aqaba is an excellent base for snorkeling and diving, with some of the world’s most beautiful and best-preserved coral reefs just offshore.

You can also go swimming, sailing, windsurfing or water-skiing. An optional trip in a glass-bottom boat offers wonderful views of Aqaba’s colourful underwater world without getting wet.

Very highly recommended in every aspect. Neos Travel's local partner Tala did an excellent job organizing everything, and there was always an on-site contact available to look after our well-being.

The trip itself was very nice and well planned, but Tala was unreachable at one point due to a self-caused car incident. Nevertheless, we could rely on Neos Travel and the overall experience remained positive.

With Neos Travel, we had a wonderful time in Jordan. The local guides, and especially our driver Yazin, were excellent. Yazin was unfailingly courteous, professional, and always ready to discuss things and stay flexible. We were rather disappointed with the on-site guide, who did not seem very friendly when problems arose. After one accommodation was canceled, we spent an entire day researching alternative options. When we raised this, the staff member reacted in a very reluctant and snappy way. Ultimately, after a lot of hassle and pressure, our request was accommodated, but it caused a lot of stress and cost us one to two vacation days. Miserable crisis management. Not good service. Otherwise, everyone else—people and guides—was so friendly and helpful that it could not spoil the trip. We are still awaiting a refund of the visa fee for our daughter. It had been charged at airport pickup, even though it was clear (per our chat) that she had already entered two weeks earlier and paid for her visa herself. We are happy to provide further explanations. Best regards, Dr. Dörte

Great trip, organized by Iman through Neos Travel's local partner. Abed was a top-notch driver and guide who guided us confidently through the week. A slightly unfortunate hotel choice on the first night was quickly corrected (we were moved to the same hotel for the last night). Everything else went as planned. They listened to our wishes, and we felt well looked after and supported. Definitely not a mistake to book this trip through Neos Travel's local partner.

From planning to the trip itself, everything went smoothly. Katrin presented several options until we found the right fit. She was available as our point of contact the whole time and always replied promptly. Our expectations in the country were fully met, from the many impressive sights to the excellent hotels. Each day was filled with new discoveries, and the local guides provided detailed insights and showed us a lot. A special mention to our English-speaking driver Ali, who was always punctual, reliable, and very friendly. I can wholeheartedly recommend Neos Travel for Jordan and for the travel experience they provide.

We're thrilled—everything went smoothly. The planning and communication with Katrin from Neos Travel were superb; she always replied promptly, answered our questions, and delivered on our wishes. Mohammed, our driver, was great and has become very dear to us. And Jordan is a destination worth visiting, especially in the current situation. We felt safe at all times.

With Katrin, we had the perfect contact for planning our trip. She was always reachable, flexible, and attentive to our wishes — and incredibly quick. Our driver Abed was a kind, helpful, punctual, courteous, open, and flexible person we would not want to miss on any part of our journey. The guides in Amman, Wadi Ghuweir, and Petra spoke good German or English, were informative, and tailored their service to our wishes. Highlights included Jerash, which we would revisit anytime. In Amman, we would explore not only the Citadel but also wander through the city center. Madaba is nice but not a must. The hot springs of Ma'in can be skipped. Nebo Mountain and the view over the Promised Land moved us deeply. The monastery with the modern church was beautiful. Wadi Mujib is a must for a bit of adrenaline. Bring water shoes and a waterproof phone or camera (or bring a waterproof bag; rentals are available locally but can be pricey). The Kempinski at the Dead Sea left nothing to be desired — plan at least half a day to enjoy the infinity pool and the amenities. Hiking in Wadi Ghuweir is wonderful; high, waterproof boots are helpful. Would we book the same hotel again? It looked nice, but we would think twice. We did not find one place overly exciting. For Petra, take the bus for the first 4 km to save time for visiting Petra itself. Petra is, of course, a highlight. With a good travel guide you can also walk a lot on your own. Definitely visit the Sacrificial Site — best approached from the back, not from the Treasury. The cooking evening with a local family was a great insight into another way of life. The jeep tour through Wadi Rum was unforgettable — about five to six hours of lighthearted adventure. Cooking with the guide in the desert was very special. The starry sky from the lodge was not as impressive due to light pollution; if you go to Wadi Rum for the stars, go deeper into the desert and be prepared to compromise a bit at the lodge (restaurant/bath...). Our relaxing finale at a luxury hotel was fantastic — the night-time view of the Red Sea from our room was breathtaking, and the dinner offered unbelievable culinary variety. We hope this report inspires others as much as an earlier review on this site inspired us.

We absolutely cannot recommend the local travel expert. He did not keep the commitments he made in advance and made exorbitant extra demands. That said, Jordan in general is well worth visiting. The ancient ruins are impressive and Petra is extraordinary, and the scenery in Wadi Rum is spectacular. However, Jordan isn’t a very clean country; plastic debris, bottles, and aluminum cans still stick out from the desert dunes. Also, insist that a German-speaking guide accompanies and explains the whole trip. With Neos Travel, you can expect reliable, well-led experiences.
